Vangelis Sakkalis
PhD, Principal Researcher (Group leader)
Dr Vangelis Sakkalis holds a Research Director position in the Institute of Computer Science – Foundation for Research and Technology (ICS – FORTH). He is the Head of the Computational Neuroscience group and the Head of Multiscale Cancer Modelling group at the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory. He received his PhD in Electronic and Computer Engineering after completing his Master’s degree at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, UK. His background falls in Biomedical Engineering, Atomic-Molecular Physics, Optoelectronics and Laser. He has been a member of the board of Directors at FORTH and was elected president of the board of researchers at FORTH. He holds a Visiting Professor appointment at the University of Crete, School of Medicine. His research interests include biosignal and image analysis, visualization, classification algorithms and biostatistics applied in computational medicine, cognitive neuroscience and biomedical informatics. He has extensive experience in the scientific coordination of research projects at the national and European levels. He has published more than 150 papers in scientific archival journals, proceedings of international conferences & workshops and scientific newsletters, related to his fields of expertise. He is highly interested in translating academic research to innovative growth. He has given numerous invited lectures worldwide and his research has been funded by numerous funding agencies and companies.

Tzamali Eleftheria
PhD
Eleftheria is a Collaborating Researcher at the Computational Bio-Medicine Laboratory (CBML) of the Institute of Computer Science at Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH). She received her PhD in Computer Science Department from the University of Crete (2010), her MSc degree in Information Processing & Neural Networks from the Department of Mathematics, King’s College London, UK. She holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Crete with specialization in Atomic-Molecular Physics and Laser. Research interests include: Computational Systems Biology, Network Biology and Mathematical Oncology.

Giorgos Tzedakis
MSc
Giorgos works as a Technical Staff member at Computational Bio-Medicine Laboratory (CBML) of Institute of Computer Science at Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH). He received the MSc degree in the fields of Multimedia Technology and Computational & Cognitive Vision & Robotics in Computer Science Department from the University of Crete (2010). He received his BSc from Applied Mathematics Department from the University of Crete (2007). Current research and programming activities involve mathematical and computational modelling of tumor growth, morphology and drug response. Research interests include: Partial differential equations, Cellular automata, Hybrid models, Biomedical Informatics and Engineering, Numerical linear algebra.

Maira Tampakaki
Graduate Student
Maria Tampakaki is a PhD Candidate in Neuroscience at the University of Zurich in Switzerland and the University of Crete in Greece. Her Thesis focuses on the Neurophysiological Characterization of the Neurogliomal Network in Brain Cancer, based on in vitro/ex vivo biological models, in silico cancer predictive algorithms and novel tools for imaging biological processes. She is a member of the Computational BioMedicine Laboratory (ICS-FORTH) in collaboration with the Biophotonics and Molecular Imaging Lab (IESL-FORTH), the Gene Expression Lab, (IMBB-FORTH) and the Multiscale Functional and Molecular Imaging Group (ETH). She received her BSc from the Department of Biology of the University of Crete in 2016 in the direction of Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology with a Bachelor Thesis on the “Differential Regulation of the Cognitive Functions in Adolescent and Adult Mice”. She received her MSc in the “Brain and Mind” Sciences at the School of Medicine, University of Crete in 2020, with a Master Thesis on “Image Guided Brain Cancer Modeling – The Role of PML in Glioblastoma Physiology”. Her main fields of interest are the physiology of the Central Nervous System and the neurophysiology of brain cancer along with the function of the fundamental neural correlates that generate cognition and behavior.
Collaborators
Our group works closely with the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) and Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), as well as the University of Crete (UoC), and the General University Hospital of Heraklion (PaGNH), in order to adequately address the multidisciplinary nature of our approach.
